Breaking the Ice: the Rain
Since most small talk in Japan (although not only) starts with the weather, there is one onomatopoeia typically used on a rainy day: ‘ame ga zaazaa futteiru’ 雨がザーザー降っている. It translates into ‘it is raining heavily’ and ‘zaazaa’ refers to the sound of the drenching rain. In English the idiom ‘it’s raining cats and dogs’ could be used in such a situation.
